Finding a guitar teacher shouldn’t be a challenge. Of course, Googling will get you a nice list of nearby guitar lesson programs, but how to choose? You’ll probably first see the corporate franchises like School of Rock, Guitar Center, Music & Arts, and Sam Ash. While there are certainly quality guitar teachers at each of these franchises, turnover is often high so you can’t be sure how long you’ll have the same teacher—and they lack flexibility in their scheduling and performance opportunities. More importantly, you’re required to buy lesson packages, instead of paying per lesson, which means when you miss a lesson, you lose money.
On the other side of the spectrum, local guitar teachers can offer you the convenience of in-home lessons and likely don’t require up front purchases. While this can be great to save you time, the costs of each lesson is generally higher. Also, trying to make a lesson room out of a living room can be pretty difficult, especially if there are other family members around. Unless you have your own music studio, your house is probably not the ideal place for a guitar lesson.
Independent guitar schools provide the best of both worlds. Such small schools have local community ties and are able to form true bonds with students and families, assuring low turnover for teachers and a great experience for students. The costs of such programs are commensurate with the corporate franchises like School of Rock, but often don’t require the commitment of a lesson package. The teachers are vetted and schools can provide more flexibility in scheduling while offer community events like open mics and songwriter workshops.
